Adding another award under its belt the Jaguar E-type has been voted as Best British Car Ever in a worldwide poll run by the Inaugural Classic and Sports Car – The London Show.
With thousands of votes cast, the E-type came out on top with the most votes beating a number of popular British icons including: the McLaren F1, Mini, Bentley Speed Six, Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost plus other admired models such as the original Range Rover and Jaguar’s own XKSS.
Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, John Edwards said that “the fact that the Jaguar E-type has captured the most votes in a global public vote is a testament to its status as one of the world’s most iconic sportscars and now, officially, as the Best British Car Ever.”
James Elliott, Classic and Sport Car magazine group editor further complimented the E-type claiming that it “has it all” and is a car that “seduces young and old and is a very worthy winner and rightly the Best British Car ever.”
Jaguar actually intended for the E-type to compete exclusively as a racecar, however, it quickly developed into a road-going grand tourer and Sports Car with an open two-seater or fixed-head coupe available.
The car was officially unveiled at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show and was an instant hit. The E-type was so popular it also attracted a number of well-known celebrity and VIP owners such as Steve McQueen, George Best, Sir Jackie Steward, Brigitte Bardot and Frank Sinatra during its 14-year production run.
