Volvo Cars and Uber have joined forces to develop next generation autonomous cars.
This joint venture will see Volvo develop new base vehicles that will incorporate the latest technologies, allowing the cars to be fully autonomous. These will then be purchased from Volvo by Uber. The two companies have contributed a combined $300m to the project.
The same base vehicles will be used in both companies autonomous cars with each company suing its own technology.
The base vehicle will be built on top of Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture. This is an advanced modular architecture that is currently being used in on the top of the line, multi award winning XC90 SUV, S90 saloon and V90 estate.
This alliance marks the beginning of what both companies view as a long term partnership.
