Suzuki has just announced that global sales of their renowned Swift model have now passed the five million mark, just eighteen months after the celebration of four million units. First launched in the UK in May 2005, more than 118,000 Swifts have been sold and it has become the most popular model in the range, accounting for 36% of the UK sales mix.
The Suzuki Swift is a world strategic model that was first built in Japan in 2004 with production bases expanding a year later to Hungary, India and China. All European Swifts are produced at Suzuki’s establishes Magyar plant in Hungary.
On a global scale, 11% of the Swift sales are in Japan, 50% in India and 19% across Europe. The Swift is sold in 140 countries and has won more than 70 awards.
In the UK, the Swift is available as a three or five door model with a choice of two engines. The first is a 1.2-litre petrol engine which emits 116g/km of CO2, the second is a Dualjet engine which features twin fuel injectors that emit just 99g/km of CO2, offering even better fuel economy. Thanks to a five star Euro NCAP rating as well as offering a low cost of ownership proposition, it can also be claimed that the Swift is one of the safest cars in its class.
The Swift range offers five different specification grades which are SZ2, SZ3, SZ-L, SZ4 with 1.2 litre petrol engine and Sport with 1.6-litre engine. As standard all models include: seven airbags, ESP, electric windows, remote central locking with deadlocks, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, MP3/WMA compatible CD tuner with USB port and steering wheel mounted audio controls.
The SZ3 and SZ3 can also be specified with four wheel drive which offers added safety during the winter months and is paired with a five door 1.2 Dualjet petrol model with manual transmission.Despite being four wheel drive the vehicle still remains light thanks to the use of small and lightweight components which makes it just 65kg heavier than the equivalent 2WD petrol model.
