Motability

At Sturgess of Leicester, we are committed to supporting the Motability Scheme in Leicestershire. This government-funded operation is designed to help people with a disability to become more mobile and gain independence through exchanging their mobility allowance for a brand new, specially adapted car.

Am I Eligible?

Anyone who receives the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement is eligible to exchange part or all of their allowance for the car of their choice. If you are unable to drive, you can nominate up to two drivers to drive for you and parents or carers of a disabled child can apply on their behalf.

Hire Options

Under the Motability Scheme, there are two hire options available - Contract Hire and Hire Purchase.

Under the Contract Hire agreement, you may have a new car on a lease of three years. Servicing & maintenance costs, tax, insurance and breakdown cover are all included as part of the agreement and you can have specific adaptations made to your Motability vehicle at no extra cost.

Under the Hire Purchase agreement, you are able to buy your own car on a contract that lasts between two and five years. Under the agreement, you will be responsible for arranging your own maintenance, insurance, tax and breakdown cover.

Adaptations

In order to make your Motability car more comfortable and easier to drive, you can have tailored adaptations made to it. There is a range of adaptations available, with the most popular being:

•    Push/Pull Hand Control - enables you to control speed manually if you have difficulty with foot pedals
•    Easy Release Handbrake - makes applying and releasing the handbrake easier if you have limited movement in your arms
•    Swivel Seat - makes getting in and out of your car easier if you have limited flexibility
•    Steering Wheel Ball - gives you greater control over steering if you only have the use of one hand or find it difficult to hold a steering wheel
