Production of the new Land Rover Discovery Sport has now begun.
The very first model has now made its way to Virgin Galactic's headquarters in New Mexico, where it will be the first of many vehicles provided by Land Rover as part of the ongoing partnership between the two companies. It will aid the team responsible for the launch of the world's first commercial spaceline.
The gift was gladly received by Stephen Attenborough, Commercial Director of Virgin Galactic, at a special ceremony held at Land Rover's Halewood plant, which also produces the Range Rover Evoque.
Murray Dietsch, Director of Land Rover Programmes, said: “It fills me with pride to have seen the first new Discovery Sport coming off the line here at our world-class Halewood production facility. We are now even more excited to hand the keys over to the crew at Virgin Galactic. The new car embodies Land Rover's spirit of Above and Beyond, so it's fitting that it will be used by a similarly pioneering company in Virgin Galactic."
The new Discovery Sport is the first of the updated Discovery generation, featuring 5+2 seating and producing a carbon footprint no larger than current 5-seat premium SUVs, and serves as another milestone in Jaguar Land Rover's five year production plan.
